"Dichroic" is defined as the property of having more than one color, especially when viewed from different angles. Dichroic Glass is created through a process of depositing thin layers of metallic oxides, such as titanium, silicon, and magnesium upon the surface of the glass in a high temperature, vacuum furnace. Dichroic coatings transmit certain wavelengths of light, while reflecting others, thus creating an interference-effect. The transmitted color is different than the reflected color, and a third color is produced by viewing the dichroic piece at a 45 degree angle.
Paperweights are considered to be the most challenging of glass arts, and they truly represent the highest achievement in this medium. Their precision and grace are a wonder to behold. As you rotate one in your hand a bouquet of flowers seems to shift as if they were in a gentle spring breeze
